we just spent the past six hours setting up, filming 40 people milling about at a church picnic, and tearing down for what will in the end be probably a two-minute video. the setting is a humorous conversation that takes place at church cookout. we had actually filmed this whole thing last fall and learned how much work it actually is, especially when you have this many people involved, and how much MORE time and preparation it takes than we actually knew. this was a our second shot; hopefully we got what we needed.
and when i say we - i really mean Rob; i am really proud of him. he has spent the past few days gathering/packing all his equipment (tripods, cables and cords, crane, green screen and even a wheel chair that he uses to roll his camera on for shots) preparing the script, thinking through and preparing each shot, going over stuff with his crew (sound guy and two other guys)... i cannot IMAGINE what goes into a hollywood movie!
my job was buying/setting up all the food, and then running around telling people where to be when (which sometimes means yelling at them. yikes-- i hate that part.) but overall i think everyone had a good time, both times, complete with badminton, three-legged races, and bobbing for apples. (the kids really got into that this time, for some reason.)
director rob huston, in action!
wish i had gotten more shots, like of rob and one of the other guys on top of the van managing the
camera crane. cool!
on the right is sparky, our star actor. he gets blown up at the end.
(but i promise, no animals were harmed in the making of this film.)
jeremy, or "bernie", our real main actor, and talia, the one who really steals the show. she was there for over four hours and she did great. of course, she had non-stop attention. :-)
it's amazing what people will do for you when food is involved. most of the folks who helped us out on this one were from our church - thank you everybody!
and thanks also to our neighbors, the Perez family, for joining in on the fun.
david kempf, sound guy extraordinaire
a glimpse of the famous wheelchair on one of the ramps rob crafted. (i couldn't believe it when we were at a garage sale a couple years ago and suddenly rob was all beside himself with excitement over buying this wheelchair. but, to his credit, he is actually using it. :-])
as our canadian buddy tim froese would say--good times, good times. and we almost didn't go through with it. yesterday one of our actors called in the morning saying he couldn't do it, so rob was on and off the phone all day trying to replace him. then the forecast kept looking spotty (it ended up being beautiful). then last night rob gets a call that one of the plants at his workplace was on fire! (he actually drove up to elkhart immediately after the shoot to check on the servers.) but in the end, we were able to do it, and it was fun and rewarding. now hopefully rob has what he needs to flesh out this piece, add the special effects, and then add it to the others we have posted at SermonSpice.com.
if you want to see any of his videos there, you can search for DoveTale Media. hopefully somewhere in the next couple months (or at least in the next year!) there will be one there called "Sparks".
that's it for me. we're gonna kick back now and watch what's left of the Colts.
good night everybody!
